Trinity Valley Community College’s Beef Cattle Show Team was recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Resources Conservation Service for the team’s volunteer assistance with their annual Plant Identification contest.
“The plan identification contest is held at the TVCC Ranch each fall for FFA and 4H teams in the Trinity-Neches Soil and Water Conservation District,” said NCRS Natural Resource Manager and Resource Team Leader for Athens Julie Moore. “Approximately 50-75 students study 50 plants to learn to identify them and learn their characteristics, then compete to identify 25 selected plants.” The top-scoring senior receives a $600 scholarship from the Conservation District.  The show team volunteers help get the grounds ready, grade papers and clean up after the event.
Moore presented the team with a plaque and letter of appreciation on behalf of NCRS State Conservationist Salvador Salinas. “The NRCS theme ‘Volunteers Improve Today for Tomorrow’ is what we are all striving for in improving the environment not only for today but for the next generation,” the letter reads. “Your dedication and passion reflect greatly upon you, the Earth Team and the Natural Resources Conservation Service as well as your community efforts as a group.”
