Trinity Valley Community College’s Iota Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, brought home several honors from the annual “Nerd Nation” conference held recently in National Harbor, MD.
The chapter received the Distinguished Honors in Action Project Award, one of only three Distinguished Honors in Action Theme Awards, Distinguished 5-Star Chapter and second finalist to the Most Distinguished Chapter, ranking them third out of 1,285 chapters in the U.S. and nine other countries. Nancy Long was also honored for being one of the two longest-serving chapter advisors.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 134,000 students inducted annually.
“Nerd Nation” is an annual conference that celebrates the stereotypes associated with being smart and over-achieving. TVCC students attending were chapter President Niyaz Murtazin, officers Hunter Smith, Chalisa Madsen and Kim Boswell, past president Nazik Orazgeldiyeva and member Phuong Do.
