Defensive Line

Jermial Ashley joined the Cardinals for the fall of 2013 in the role of coaching the defensive line, and his presence was immediately felt throughout the team and the league.  Leading a deep and talented crew of defensive linemen, Ashley's front line helped the Cardinal defense dominate opposing offenses week in and week out.  Leading the conference in total defense, rushing defense, scoring defense and sacks.  The D-line also boasted 2 of the 4 first team 2013 All SWJCFC selections,(DT Jhaustin Thomas and DE Duval Jackson), as well the 2013 SWJCFC Defensive Player of the Year and 1st Team NJCAA All American selection, Jhaustin Thomas.  Thomas and Jackson finished 4th and 6th nationally in sacks nationally this season.

Coach Ashley spent the previous 3 seasons working with the defensive line at Oklahoma State University.  With the Cowboys, Ashley not only assisted with the defensive line but also assisted with several special teams units and the entire defense.  While at OSU he helped tutor 3 defensive lineman to All Big 12 honors, including the Detroit Lions' Ugo Chinasa, the Denver Broncos' Jaimie Blatnik and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Calvin Barnett.  Coach Ashley also helped Oklahoma State to 3 consecutive bowl games, the 2010 Alamo Bowl, 2011 Fiesta Bowl and the 2012 Heart of Texas Bowl.

Coach Smiley not only loves Jermial's experience of coaching among the nation's elite in the Big 12, but also that he is a real world example of how to be successful coming out of the SWJCFC.  Upon graduation from Keller Fossil Ridge High School, Jermial signed with Tyler Junior College.  He took advantage of his time at TJC, being named an NJCAA All-American at defensive end, and then graduating and signing with the University of Kansas.  While at Kansas, Jermial was a 2-year starter at defensive end and was named to the All Big 12 teams in both 2004 and 2005, ranking 2nd on the team in both sacks and pass breakups.  Upon completion of his career at Kansas Jermial signed free agent with the Cleveland Browns.  After the NFL and spending a few years in private business, Coach Ashley's mentor and defensive coordinator with the Jayhawks talked him into joining the coaching profession and adding him to his new defensive staff at Oklahoma State University.

Jermial originally hails from Fort Worth where he attended Fossil Ridge HS.  He holds an A.A. degree from Tyler Junior College and a B.S. in Economics from the University of Kansas.   He is also the proud father of Eliana, his 3 year old daughter.
